Hello, blurry Winterhalter!

Sometimes I can’t believe I’m still listening to écailles de lune, but then I realize I am still finding new, interesting bits in the music that I had never heard before. Good stuff.

Fursy + Neige.

I kinda feel like I’ll never appreciate Amesoeurs the way they intended.  I love the city.  I love the ugly.  I love it because I feel it’s necessary to keep the ugly out of the rest of the world.  hyper-dense and unnatural in one corner, as natural as possible everywhere else.

I don’t think American cities can really compare to European cities.  Houston & Austin are big cities but they’re newer.  Boston and NYC both left me overwhelmed with their buildings, age, amount of people, etc., but I think standing at a corner of a street in any European city with their old buildings, narrower streets, etc., casts a whole new light on the atmospher.

I think Neige was correct in saying that they play metal from Gotham City — the music & lyrics definitely describe the loneliness and the overwhelming sense other-worldliness (and maybe wrongness) found in foggy, dark, dirty cities like the fictional Gotham City.   (video via hikingmetalpunk)

When I first heard Alcest (their first album), I thought for sure they were pure black metal. I’ve been listening to their discography all day and I like the progression from heavy to shoegaze.

I started in the opposite direction, with this album, and tried to figure out how Neige ever had any black metal cred.  I love all his stuff, though.  I’m hoping there’ll be some copies of Lantlos’ .neon left by the time I get paid.

Neige has always had black metal cred, especially when you bring up bands like Peste Noire and Mortifera that he played in when he was younger.  It’s amazing to me that he & Fursy Teyssier are both my age — 23, 24-ish.  So young & talented!  :)
